Does your Chimney stink on those summer days

Yes it happens often and is caused by creosote build up, a natural occurring residue of wood burning.  When your home is sealed up tight, the A/C is on as well as the humidity high this smell worsens.  A major issue that causes this is air being drawn down the chimney, most likely due to a pressure problem.   The first step to remedy this is to have your annual chimney sweep and safety inspection by a licensed and insured professional.   Make sure they check to see if your damper cap is working properly and totally ceiling up at the top to avoid the stinky downdrafts.  You can also try to deodorize and absorb the smell by setting a box of baking soda inside the firebox!
